newark beacon supports small businesses

You may be aware of an initiative called Small Business Saturday UK which is a not-for-profit, grassroots national campaign, which exists to support, inspire and promote small businesses on the first Saturday in December each year.

The campaign encourages businesses to promote themselves and work with other small businesses, and consumers to ‘buy local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

The three Nottinghamshire Oxford Innovation Centres are supporting the initiative by way of a celebration of local businesses through a networking coffee morning (or afternoon) in Worksop, Mansfield and Newark. This will take place in the run up to the event on 28th and 29th November.

You are invited to join us at the event and we will also be inviting outside businesses to attend. This is a great opportunity to get involved in this national campaign and to network with your fellow tenants and also to showcase your business to external companies.

Dates for each event are:

 Monday 28th – Newark (2pm – 4pm)
 Tuesday 29th – Worksop (10am -12 noon), Mansfield (2pm - 4pm)
Refreshments and cake will be provided at each centre.
If you want to get involved and share your photos and tweets etc on the day please use @newarkbeacon and:

Hashtag - #SmallBizSatUK and @SmallBizSatUK

If you want to find out more about small business Saturday, please visit the website.

Newark Primary School Teacher Celebrates £3million Turnover Providing Websites to Schools

A primary school teacher who started a business from his bedroom in Newark is celebrating a turnover of £3million.
PrimarySite, which was set up in 2002 by Geoff Millington and his late wife Rose, is now the UK’s largest and fastest-growing provider of websites to primary schools.

The success of the company, that now employs 58 staff and has achieved 15% market share across UK primary schools and academies, has been largely helped by Newark Beacon, which is managed by Oxford Innovation.
Newark Beacon provides flexible workspace and supports small businesses, and after helping PrimarySite secure £180,000 in funding, from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Nottinghamshire Economic Development Fund, the company is now moving into their own premises located in Newark town centre.

Mr Millington said: “Working from the Beacon was invaluable, allowing and helping us to concentrate on an actual strategic business plan.
“We were given help with targets and time scales and we began working towards a plan rather than just being reactive. The support we have had has been fantastic and because of this we have grown and now need bigger premises.
“The Beacon is the perfect support for start-ups and gives new businesses the leg-up needed for success and we are hugely grateful to the help we got for securing the funding which was pivotal to us moving premises.”
Mr Millington came up with the idea of the business after finding it difficult to update his school website pages.
He said: “When I was a teacher, the school had a website, which was not easy to update.
“I became frustrated by this and set up a content management system specifically designed for primary schools, to help primary schools update their websites as easily as possible.”

The business grew quickly and within five years Mr Millington gave up his teaching role at Bowbridge Primary School to focus on the business, which is when he moved to Newark Beacon.
By the end of 2012, PrimarySite employed 31 staff and had expanded into four offices at Newark Beacon. PrimarySite has since continued to grow, recently launching its 3,500th live website. The company is on target to generate a turnover of more than £4million this year and is moving to its own larger premises.

Andrea Thomson, Centre Manager at the Newark Beacon, said: “This demonstrates the value of an ongoing business coaching service that evolves with the changes in strategic focus of an early stage business.
“Initially our support was directed towards strategic development; competitive differentiation in the value proposition as well as operational excellence, followed by a focus on driving sales volume.”
