“Having a business mentor has been extremely important to me; I was working on my own and if I had an idea that I needed to talk about, David was there to help, advise and challenge my way of thinking. This was invaluable and a second opinion really helped.

Now I am in a position where I am scaling the business up. I have created the business model that David and I discussed and it is working really well. This has enabled me to find time to focus on working on the business rather than in the business which was my challenge when I first started.

Winning the Pioneer 10 Best New Business Award has been a great learning curve for me – being able to tap into the support when I needed, being able to talk through my ideas and follow up with a clear action plan has been great for the business and for me personally."

First Resource Bureau collects Easter Eggs for Children in Hospital.

A company here at Newark Beacon held a collection for chocolate eggs in the run up to Easter. They were delivered to the children's ward of Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. This was the message from Sales Director, Stephanie Revill:

"I just wanted to send a special thank you for all of your donations, we hand delivered the eggs today to the QMC Children’s wards and also the hemophilia children’s unit and they were all over the moon with what we had done and the amount of donations we had. Many children will now have huge smiles on their faces and tummy’s full of chocolate thanks to all of you.

In the space of 4 days we collected and donated a total of 120 eggs along with Easter baskets, chocolate bunnies, bunny ears and various other bits."

Pioneer 10 Free Event!!!

Newark Beacon was proud to host the Masterclass- Facebook for Business with Lindsey Newman-Wood from Passion Marketing on the 27th of September.

This was the perfect way for clients to interact with each other and learn how to promote their businesses in a new way.

We had lots of positive feedback and struggled to choose between them but this was our favourite

"Yesterday's masterclass was really fantastic - a room of interesting people in a great venue with all the basics presented in a fun, engaging way. I took away 17 items on my to-do list, of which two are already done and working for me and my business!".

We have more exciting events coming up so please do take a look!

The nationwide competition has been created to identify the next generation of high-growth businesses. The winners can choose a tailored package in-line with their requirements and what support is needed. The unique offering includes:

  • private/shared/lab/virtual workspace up to the value of £5,000 (offering current Newark Beacon customers a discount on their existing tenancy)
  • business coaching which will be delivered locally by expert consultants who are part of the Oxford Innovation network
  • and opportunity to pitch to investors.

Any SME registered in the UK is eligible to apply no matter what stage they are at.

Becky Hawkins, Centre Manager said: "There are a number of exciting small businesses in this area with growth potential and it really would be fantastic to see home-grown talent in the top three of the Scale-up Stars of the Future competition. I'd strongly urge people who are looking to scale-up their business to enter to benefit from professional support and Oxford Innovation's 30 years of supporting business growth."

Oxford Innovation has helped over 10,000 SMEs to become sustainable businesses since renowned entrepreneurs, Martin and Audrey Wood, founded the company in 1987. The husband and wife team also co-founded Oxford Instruments and The Oxford Trust.

According to a report* from innovation foundation, NESTA, just 6% of high growth companies generated over half of the UK's employment growth.

Becky Hawkings added: "We're excited to discover the next generation of scale-up stars who will create jobs and help to strengthen the economy in this area in addition to ensuring the UK is at the forefront of innovation."

To enter the Scale-up Stars of the Future competition, businesses are required to complete an online application form and submit a short three-minute video summarising the business, innovation, growth plans and how you could benefit from Oxford Innovation's support. The deadline for entry is 1 September 2017. To enter or find out more, visit
